Père David's Deer
Père David’s deer are a truly unique species, instantly recognisable for their unusual combination of features that set them apart from other deer. With long, elegant antlers, a slightly camel-like neck, and a donkey-like tail, they are unlike any other animal in the deer family.
Once extinct in the wild, the species survived thanks to small populations in captivity, where coordinated conservation efforts helped prevent their complete loss. These deer have since been successfully reintroduced to parts of their native range in China, marking an important conservation success story.
Adapted for life in wet and marshy environments, they even have webbed hooves that help them move through water with ease. Their remarkable recovery highlights the importance of international cooperation in protecting endangered species for the future.
