Axis Deer

Axis deer are one of the most recognisable deer species, admired for their beautiful spotted coats and elegant appearance. Their distinctive markings remain throughout their lives, helping them blend into the dappled light of forest habitats in the wild.

These social animals are often seen grazing together in groups, calmly exploring their surroundings in search of grasses, leaves, fruits, and other vegetation. Males can be identified by their impressive antlers and darker facial markings, particularly during the breeding season.

Visitors may also hear the wide variety of sounds axis deer use to communicate with one another, from sharp warning calls to softer vocalisations within the herd. Their alert behaviour and graceful movements make them a favourite to observe on the Safari Drive.
