African Wild Dog

African wild dogs are highly social and intelligent predators, instantly recognisable by their unique mottled coats, which make them look as though they have been splashed with paint. This distinctive pattern has earned them the nickname “painted dogs”.

These incredible animals live in tightly bonded packs where cooperation is essential for survival. Every member plays a role, from hunting and feeding to caring for pups, making them one of the most coordinated hunting species in Africa.

African wild dogs are built for endurance, with long legs, powerful jaws, and large, rounded ears that help both with heat regulation and communication. They are exceptional long-distance hunters, using teamwork and stamina to chase down prey across open landscapes.

Found across southern and eastern Africa, they inhabit grasslands, savannahs, and wooded areas. Their cooperative hunting strategy allows them to take down animals such as antelope and warthog, making them highly effective carnivores and vital predators within their ecosystems.
