Congo Buffalo
Congo buffalo are a smaller, forest-dwelling subspecies of African buffalo, known for their reddish-brown coats and distinctive hairy ears, which help protect them from insects. Despite being more compact than their savannah relatives, they are still powerful and resilient animals.
These buffalo use their horns not only for defence but also for establishing dominance within the herd. Communication is key to their social structure, and they often signal to one another through ear movements and body language.
Congo buffalo are typically found in the forests, wetlands, and savannah edges of Central and West Africa, where they graze on grasses and leafy vegetation. While not currently classified as endangered, they face ongoing pressures from hunting and habitat loss.
