Ankole Cow

Ankole cattle are a striking and ancient breed of domesticated African cattle, instantly recognisable by their enormous, sweeping horns. Often regarded as a symbol of status and heritage in parts of Africa, they have been closely connected to herding communities for generations.

Despite their impressive appearance, Ankole cattle are gentle herbivores that live alongside people in managed herds. At night, they often rest together with calves safely positioned in the centre of the group, using their size and strength as natural protection.

Found across arid grasslands and bush regions in countries such as South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, Ankole cattle play an important role in traditional farming life, providing milk, meat, and labour while remaining an iconic part of African culture.
