North American Wolf (Canis lupus)...
The North American Wolf has a powerfully built skeleton, long nose, strong jaws and ears always pricked. Their coat varies in thickness according to climatic conditions and is generally brown/grey in colour with a touch of black. Adult males can stand around 75cm at the shoulder and although of similar appearance to a large domestic dog, it howls rather than barks.
Cubs are born once a year in April/May, with between 3 to 7 in a litter. They are born blind and will suckle their mother for around 6 weeks and are fully adult at 2 years. Wolves once ranged over the whole of Europe. The last English wolf was killed during the reign of Henry VII. In Scotland they remained longer - the last being killed in 1743. Wolves have been virtually exterminated throughout France, but still exist in protected areas in Italy, the Spanish Uplands, Hungary and the Balkans.
Wolves inhabit both forest and plains and may suddenly appear where they have not been seen for many years. They feed on other animals and usually hunt as a pack.
