DISCOVERY ROOM VOLUNTEER

West Midland Safari and Leisure Park provides a range of environmental wildlife education to visiting schools, groups and families. Volunteers play a vital role within the park helping to promote our message of conservation and education to all our visitors.

We are looking for friendly enthusiastic people who enjoy working with children, have an interest in wildlife and are looking to gain experience within environmental education.

Volunteers will be based within our Discovery Room which houses some of the park’s smaller residents including snakes, small mammals, insects and arachnids. Amongst other things, volunteers are expected to handle these creatures in front of public audiences and carry out essential husbandry work.

Within our programme of talks, animal handling sessions and activities, volunteers may be supporting the Education and/or Discovery Trail teams with a wide range of daily tasks.

Example daily tasks;
Assisting within educational talks to school groups (when available).
Delivering informative friendly animal encounters to the general public.
Helping evaluate current interpretation methods by carrying our surveys and feedback questionnaires.
Assisting with general animal husbandry (feeding and cleaning) of the Discovery Trail animals (mainly small mammals and minibeasts).
Talking and interacting with the visitors around the Discovery Trail.
Helping to keep the Discovery Trail clean and safe (hovering, dusting & cleaning)

Essential
Knowledge or interest in wildlife.
Ability to work with a range of people from different age groups and backgrounds
Self motivated, with the ability to work alone or within a team
Good communication skills

Desirable
Biological science or relevant related qualification
Experience of working with children and/or in zoo environment or similar position
Creative skills
Experience with animal handling and husbandry

Please note that Volunteers DO NOT work alongside the keepers with all the animals around the Park, and becoming a volunteer does not lead to paid employment. For employment vacancies please see our employment page.

Various days are available for suitable candidates, but we request that all volunteers should try to commit a minimum of 1 day per week (10am-4pm) for 6 weeks.
Due to the nature of the post an enhanced disclosure with the Criminal Records Bureau will be required for any successful volunteers.
