Most species like humans are diurnal which means they are most active during the day and sleep at night.

However there are lots of animals that are nocturnal which means that they sleep during the day and are awake during the night.

Lion
Lions are nocturnal, they will sleep most of the day under trees in the shade as it is very hot during the daytime. Lions are very lazy animals and will often sleep for up to 21 hours a day. At night time it is cooler and this is when they will usually hunt for food. Hunting in the dark is easier than in daylight because their prey cannot see them coming.
Hippo
Hippos are nocturnal, during the day they sleep in the rivers but a few hours after sunset Hippos leave the water to graze on the land.

Ostrich
There Ostriches are diurnal and go to sleep at night. Ostriches sleep with their necks upright most of the night, however if they do extend their necks to the ground it is only a couple of times a night and never longer than 15 minutes.
Wallaby
Wallabies are diurnal and sleep at night, during the day they will rest in the shade of a tree and will look for food in the afternoon when it it is not so hot.

Rhino
Rhinos are nocturnal. During the hot African day, they lie in mud or dust. At night they feed on grasses.
Owl
Owls are nocturnal, and sleep during the day. At night they will hunt for food. Their big eyes allow them to have great vision in the dark.
