Humans
belong to a large group of animals called Mammals.
Lions are also
mammals and they have many body parts that Humans have for
example a brain, heart, lungs, stomach, liver and kidneys. |
| |
Brain
The brain controls all the funtions in your body. It is protected inside your
skull. The Sperm Whale has a huge brain that weighs about 20 pounds (9
kg); it is the largest brain of any animal. |
Heart
The heart is a muscle that pumps blood around the body. The right side of your
heart receives blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs. The left
side of the heart does the exact opposite: it receives blood from the lungs
and pumps it out to the body. |

Lungs
Your lungs give you the oxygen you need to live. Our lungs put oxygen into
the blood and remove carbon dioxide. All mammals use their lungs to breathe,
but other animals such as fish use gills to breathe and frogs can breathe
through their skin. Our lungs are made up of lots of tiny air sacs called
alveoli. |
Stomach
The stomach is a stretchy "sack" that's shaped like the letter "j." The
stomach is like a mixer, churning and mashing together all the small balls
of food that you swallowed into smaller and smaller pieces until it is a liquid
mixture. It can take around 4 hours for your stomach to do this. |

|
Liver
The liver removes waste products from the blood and stores some important chemicals.
Apart from the brain, it is the most complex
organ in the body. It has a wide range of functions and acts very much
like a factory. The liver turns the liquid mixture made by the stomach
into useful proteins. |
Kidneys
Each kidney is about 5 inches long and about 3 inches wide. About 400 gallons
of recycled blood is pumped through the kidneys every day! Then the waste
is collected out of the blood by tiny filters inside the kidneys. The waste
that is collected is combined with water to make urine. |
